We are pleased to report that construction is now complete on the deep water well in Uganda that we funded earlier in 2024.

Our partners at the Women Arises Association sent photos of the new well and testimonials from the locals who are now benefiting from the access to clean water for which it provides.

Clean Water Project Update: Water Well for Jokolera Spring 1

“I lost one of my children in 2017 (crying), I could never forget that day. We were all tired from the garden and I sent my 13-year-old girl to go and fetch water while I was home preparing what to cook.

She never came back.

I was angry—full of questions for why she was delayed and prepared to punish her,—when our neighbour’s son came crying and informed me that Nalugo Juliet had been killed; knocked into the water spring by a cow. Ever since that day, I lived in fear whenever I had to go to that spring to fetch water.

I am really happy that no one else is going to die within that well. Our village has such joy now, as we have been craving for the construction of this water spring because we moved such long distances to have access to clean water (9 – 10 km) before it was complete.

Thank you very much for coming to our rescue, we ladies suffer a lot with collection of water. I am really so happy for what you have done for us”. —Namuddu Rhobina (Local Mother)

“I am so excited for the future of our community, as the local Council One chairman I received a lot of complaints about the spring and challenges my community members have passed through. I tried very much to lobby the government to construct it but all fell on deaf ears.

This is a very great achievement in our community and the neighboring areas. Poor sanitation as a result of no proper well has been the order of the day. People have lost their lives fetching water from ponds. Thank you Women Arises Association and your partners at The White Feather Foundation. You have done a great job that our government failed to solve”. —Mr. Ssembatya Henry (Community Chairman)

Jokolera Spring Well

“I wish the construction of this well came years’ earlier. I failed to go to school because my father wanted me to be at home to fetch water. He had the belief that educating a girl is waste of money since we would eventually get married.

My father had allowed me to go to school on the one condition that I have to first fetch water at home every day. I couldn’t manage fetching water from the nearby borehole (8 km) away and then go to school as I was already tired and, in the evening, again, I had to return to fetch more water.

I am now happy that at least my children will not face the same challenge I went through. Not only them, but other children in this village—including girls—will manage to go to school. May God bless you abundantly as what you have done for us was never dreamed of in this village”. —Joan Nalukenge (Local Mother)
