The Walking School Bus

The-Walking-School-Bus

The Walking School Bus works to empower access to education through mutually beneficial partnerships that promote their holistic, research-based approach of Access, Nutrition and Curriculum.

Their journey started with the realization that students traveled great distances (over 5km) to access education. While searching for solutions to this problem of Access, they learned that once students would arrive at school, they did not have adequate Nutrition – a prerequisite for education. Finally, while working in the classrooms, they learned of the high rates of teachers not being properly trained and absenteeism; these obstacles were hurting student literacy – the number one predictor of academic success and they started working to improve Curriculum through their SiMBi Reading Application and solar-powered Classrooms.

The Walking School Bus team will be returning to Uganda from July 19th – 30th to implement their three-pronged approach to educational access. They will be: gifting a school bus to improve access, constructing water catchment systems and community supported gardens to improve nutrition and building classrooms which run their SiMBi Application (backed by Anderson Cooper) to improve curriculum.

They’re excited to have partnered with Photographers Without Borders to professionally capture and document their work and the remarkable communities they work with. They’re always looking for people to join them on their expeditions and to create positive change.
