The fires that ravaged the Los Angeles area earlier this month resulted in the displacement of tens of thousands of residents, destroyed nearly 17,000 buildings and homes, and resulted in the loss of life for 28 people.
The fires were exacerbated by dry conditions, in addition to severe Santa Ana winds. The weather was intensified as a result of climate change.
Our History with Disaster Relief
For many years, we have provided relief in the wake of natural (and unnatural) disasters.
In 2015, after a 7.8 earthquake struck in Nepal, we partnered with Music for Relief to provide temporary shelter, transportation and medical assistance to displaced citizens.
The following year, when Ecuador suffered an earthquake of the same magnitude, we returned with Music for Relief to furnish 2,000 survivors with hygiene kits as their area recovered.
More recently, when Russia’s War on Ukraine began, we initiated an emergency campaign to provide funds to World Central Kitchen, who were on the ground in the war zone, feeding the hungry. Our donation provided life-saving meals to 4,000 displaced people.
Our Connection to the City
The White Feather Foundation has deep roots in the Los Angeles community. Two of our board members reside there, in addition to our legal teams and other vendors who we regularly utilize. We conduct all of our in-person team meetings there and attend various events and conferences in support of our partners and friends. For those of us who do not live there, it is considered a second home.
Our Contribution
We chose to divide our $10k donation equally between two organisations:
FireAid
With efforts led by The Annenberg Foundation, who have a long history of philanthropic giving with tangible results, aid to this newly formed nonprofit is pledged to go to both short- and long-term efforts, not only to assist those in need today, but to help prevent future fire devastation. This aligns with our Environmental and Clean Water areas of giving. Learn more about their intentions and the benefit concerts at fireaidla.org.
MusiCares
This long-established charity concentrates on helping those in the music industry by way of mental health services, emergency assistance for basic living expenses and funds for medical care so that they may recover and return to creating the art that is so vital to our world. Their work aligns with our Education and Health area of giving. Learn more about their work at Musicares.org.
Our Sincere Gratitude
Emergency donations such as this would not be possible were it not for the generosity of our supporters and specifically, monthly members of our program, “The Quill,” which allocates contributions to our General Fund. We thank everyone who has given unrestricted donations to this area of giving.
If you would like to make a one-time donation to help replenish this fund, or become a monthly member, please visit our website.
